Reverse Black Tie

• Black-tie events charge high prices for attendees to raise money for charity. These events include dinner and a presentation highlighting the activities of the charity. Hold a reverse black tie to raise funds for your Relay for Life team. Invite donors to attend wearing jeans and T-shirts. Serve hot dogs instead of steak and beer instead of wine. Rent a banquet room at a local restaurant. Keep the ticket prices consistent with black tie events and explain to donors that the additional funds will go to Relay for Life. Include a presentation highlighting activities of the American Cancer Society and individuals who have been helped by the organization.
  
  

Comedy Show

• People love to laugh. Comedy shows provide entertainment for dating couples, families and friends. Host a comedy show with the proceeds going to your Relay for Life team. Contact local dinner theaters or playhouses to find one that will collaborate with you on the show. Identify a comedian within the state with ties to the American Cancer Society. Find a local comedian to open the show. Scout local talent for a comedic emcee to manage the stage. Local newscasters or radio disc jockeys make good emcees. Add up the costs to coordinate the comedy show. Estimate the number of attendees. Divide your total costs by the number of attendees. Increase this cost by 50 percent to arrive at an admission price. The additional 50 percent goes to Relay for Life.
  
  

Haunted House

• Haunted houses attract fear seekers, especially in October. Locate an empty building, possibly a storefront that is currently vacant. Talk to the owner about renting the building at a reduced rate to raise money for Relay for Life. Brainstorm with your teammates scary ideas to incorporate in the haunted house. Enlist friends of the Relay for Life team members to help out. Shop at thrift stores for old clothes to use as costumes. Use old linens to decorate the walls. Spray-paint ominous messages on the walls. Collect an admission fare at the door.
