- Many of the foods grown in a survival garden are canned for long-term storage. Tomatoes, for instance, may be canned as pasta or pizza sauce, or even diced tomatoes. Creating a vegetable soup with garden produce is easy, and you may can it all for future use.
- Other foods can be dried. Many herbs, for instance, are hung to dry. Others are dried in the oven. Many fruits are dried using a food dehydrator. These include apples and berries. Tomatoes are another good choice.
- Many fruits, vegetables and herbs work well when frozen. Produce can be frozen by type or in a mix. It is easy to chop a bunch of vegetables, such as broccoli, carrots and squash, and to freeze them in a container for stew later on.
- Apples wrapped individually in newspaper will survive a good portion of the winter. Hard-skinned squash and pumpkins will last in a cool room. Store carrots in a bucket underground, covered with a bale of hay, to be used throughout the winter.
