- To subscribe to FiOS, visit a Verizon outlet or go to the company's website. Prior to installation, a technician makes sure the home is equipped with a fiber connection and mounts an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), a box similar to the phone and cable connections, on the outside of the house, and runs a fiber cable from a nearby telephone pole to the ONT. The technician can then install the TV hookups, connect the ONT to existing coaxial cabling in the house and connect the cable to the FiOS TV receiver. The system is activated and tested to make sure the equipment and all features are up and running.
- Fiber-optic cables transmit data by sending pulses of light through a thin optical fiber. The light forms a modulated electromagnetic wave that carries the information. This development provided a major upgrade in speed, quality and magnitude of signal, as well as the amount of information that could be sent compared to older copper wires and electrical transmission. Fiber optics allowed for the creation of the networks needed for high-speed Internet and digital television that we enjoy today. The FiOS receiver decompresses the signals sent through the fibers and converts them to pictures and sound for your TV.
- FiOS TV, like the major cable and satellite providers, gives viewers more than 300 digital channels, more than 100 of those in HD and Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound. It also includes video on demand, on-screen menus, guides and settings, parental controls, games and other interactive features. The DVR records and stores up to 80 hours of standard definition (SD) programs and up to 20 hours in HD. With the right TV and audio equipment you'll have a sharp, detailed picture and theater-quality sound.
