How do I Transplant & Start an Aloe Vera Plant?

    • 1). Remove an offset, or pup, from the mother plant by cutting the attaching stem near the base of the mother plant. Leave the stem attached to the offset.

    • 2). Allow the wounded stem to dry out for a few days before planting.

    • 3). Prepare a container of moist cactus soil mix and place the pup directly onto the surface of the starter mix. Water the pup every 2 to 3 days to keep the soil moist, but not wet, until the plant takes root.

    • 4). Fertilize with a dilute solution of water-soluble fertilizer once the plant is well rooted. Make the fertilizer according to package directions and dilute with an equal amount of water.

    • 5). Transplant into the ground or a 1 gallon container once the offset is well rooted, approximately 4 to 6 weeks after planting. Test the roots by giving the plant a gentle tug. If the roots hold, the plant is ready to transplant.

    • 6). Plant the transplant at the same depth it is currently growing, firming the soil around the plant to anchor it. Water thoroughly after planting.
