- 1). Turn off the water supply for the washing machine valve you want to replace. Newer homes may have a separate cut-off valve mounted on the water supply pipe, while in older homes you will have to cut off the water for the entire house at the main valve.
- 2). Unplug the washing machine. Pull it out away from the wall so you can access the hoses behind. Use a towel to wipe up any water that may have leaked or spilled.
- 3). Unscrew the coupling from the washing machine hose attached to the water supply valve.
- 4). Spray the supply valve with penetrating lubricant. Allow this to soak in for a few minutes. Take the wrench and use it to turn the supply valve in a counterclockwise direction. Many valves will have a hexagonal base which will make gripping with the pliers easier.
- 5). Clean off the threads on the water supply pipe with a scouring pad. Apply pipe thread compound to the threads.
- 6). Screw on a new water supply valve and tighten.
- 7). Wrap the threads on the valve with plumber's tape. Reconnect the washing machine hose. Turn on the water supply and the electricity.
- 8). Run a small load in the washer. Watch the new supply valve and check that it is working properly. Push the washing machine back to its original location.
