- 1). Tune the low E string. Tune to a reference point such as a piano or another guitar if one is available. If not, tune the string until it is roughly as tight feeling as a tuned guitar E string.
- 2). Press down behind the fifth fret of the E string with a finger on your fretting hand. Play this note with your picking hand and tune the next string (A) to this note.
- 3). Sound the note on the fifth fret of the A string. Tune the next string (D) to this note.
- 4). Play the note on the fifth fret of the D string. Tune the next thinnest string (G) to this note.
- 5). Play the note at the fourth fret of the G string. Tune the next string (B) to this note. This is the major third interval that makes guitar tuning unique.
- 6). Sound the note at the fifth fret of the B string and tune the highest string (high E) to this note.
