So you just got a new puppy and now it's time to start the house training.
For some breeds of dogs this can be very easy like the Shiba Inu who are very cat like and want to remain clean, but for others, like so many breeds, it can be a challenge.
There are many ways to go about house training you puppy but the first thing you have to do is realize that all breeds are different and each dog's personality is never the same as the next.
But chances are you've probably researched your puppy's breed before you purchased him so you should now how easy it is to potty train him, either from the breeder or through doing research.
If not look on the many sites, including this one, for information on the breed.
Next you have to determine your puppies personality.
For instance is he timid, brazen, etc.
because these indicators will tell you what is the best approach.
You don't want to scare a timid puppy any more then he already is, even not on purpose, but a brazen one could take a good firm no.
So determine that first and then decide which approach you thin is best and give it a try.
Again one thing to always keep in mind is be positive, you will get favourable results much faster.
Also stick to it, just because your puppy hasn't done it in the house for a while, doesn't mean he won't if you get lazy in your training.
So here are a few good ways to house train you new puppy: 1.
Stick to a schedule Don't change up your puppies schedule, if at all possible, make one and stick to it.
Take him out every morning as soon as you get up at a certain time, every time he's done eating, before bed at the same time and any other specific times you'd feel like adding, just make sure you stick to it.
This helps in training your puppy to go at certain times and as he gets older, you can space it out more, until finally he only goes a few times a day.
2.
Don't let your puppy be the boss This means when you take your puppy out, stay there until he goes.
Just because he looks cute or runs around and plays, doesn't mean you let him off the hook.
Stay where you are until your puppy goes.
3.
Set a predetermined area Don't confuse your puppy, take him to a predetermined spot in the yard or wherever you want him to go and make sure you keep going back there.
This will just be another indicator to your puppy that it is time to go and hopefully help you train your puppy that much faster.
4.
Use his personal space at night This means to use his crate or bed or what ever he likes most to and place him in it at night.
Dogs don't like to soil their sleeping areas, so they will hold it to the best of their ability, giving you time to see he is uncomfortable get him outdoors.
5.
Set up a detention area If your puppy won't go or if he refuses to stop going in the house, then gate off a place in your kitchen or another room that you don't use and place your puppy in there.
Do this every time he goes some place you don't want him to and ignore him.
Don't give him toys or treats or anything for a few minutes.
This lets him know that it isn't accepted and hopefully it will turn your puppy's attitude around quickly.
A few other good tricks depend on your dogs size and other factors.
For instance if your puppy isn't a large sized dog, at night set up a litter or sand box for him and leave it nearby.
This shows your puppy that he has an acceptable place to go in necessary.
Also another obvious factor, but one often over looked, is to get your puppy used to the area where he'll be going to the bathroom.
For your puppy may never have seen gravel before or whatever you have in your backyard.
So it would be a good idea to get him used to it.
Also as always reward your puppy with treats when he goes to the bathroom and give him a good amount of attention.
Puppies always like to be rewarded and hopefully soon he'll figure out that the better behaved he is, the more treats and attention he'll get.
Overall you have to know your dogs breed traits and above all personality.
Then you have to adapt your training to that, which will make for the best possible training for the both of you.
Also, as always, remain positive.
And that's the lets Face it Facts.
