How to Change the Fax Transmission Speed of Windows XP

    Change Fax Modem Port Speed

    • 1). Click "Start" and then click "Run."

    • 2). Type "devmgmt.msc" in the Open command line.

    • 3). Click the expansion node (plus sign) to reveal all installed modems.

    • 4). Right-click your fax modem. (Note: If you only have one modem installed, it will also be used to send faxes.)

    • 5). Click "Properties."

    • 6). Click the "Modem" tab.

    • 7). Select a new transmission speed under Maximum Port Speed.

    • 8). Click "OK" to exit, or stay within the Software Modem Properties dialog box and continue to the Change Transmit and Receive Buffer Speed Settings section.

    • 1). Follow Steps 1 through 5 in the Change Fax Modem Port Speed section to access the Software Modem Properties dialog box.

    • 2). Click the "Advanced" tab and then click "Advanced Port Settings."

    • 3). Check "Use FIFO buffers (requires 16550 compatible UART)" to improve modem speed performance. Alternately, uncheck this option if you are experiencing connection problems, data loss or overrun errors, and then click "OK."

    • 4). Move the "Receive Buffer" slider to the right, between one and 14, to increase the fax data transmission rate. Alternately, move the slider to the left to decrease the rate in order to help solve connection problems.

    • 5). Move the "Transmit Buffer" slider to the right, between one and 16, to increase fax data transmission performance when sending faxes. Alternately, move the slider to the left to decrease the buffer size to match allocated RAM.

    • 6). Click "OK" twice to exit.
