What Is a PUK Code Lock?

    PUK Code Definition

    • A PIN Unlocking Key is an eight-digit numeric code that's unique to each SIM card. The PUK code is used to enable a SIM card that has been blocked as a security precaution. SIM cards can be protected with the use of a four- to eight-digit PIN code. This code is set by the wireless provider or the user. If a SIM is locked, you have a limited number of opportunities to enter the PIN code -- usually three to five. After multiple wrong entries, the SIM becomes blocked temporarily and can be unlocked only by entering the PUK code.

    Finding Your PUK

    • You can get the PUK from your wireless provider. Some offer the information when you sign in to your online account, while others require you to call customer service or a retail store. Generally, your provider won't release the PUK code until you've verified the account, usually with the account password or account holder's Social Security number. This is to protect the account holder, since the PUK code is needed only when a SIM card security PIN has been entered incorrectly.

    Unlocking a Blocked SIM

    • Once you've obtained your PUK code, you can use it to unblock your SIM card. This will also give you an opportunity to reset the PIN code to a number you can remember. For maximum security, avoid using birthdays or any number that's easily guessed. Insert the locked SIM into your wireless device and power it on. Enter the PUK code at the prompt, and then press "OK." You're then prompted to enter a new four- to eight-digit PIN. Enter the PIN, press "OK," and then re-enter it to confirm.

    PUK Code Tips

    • Don't attempt to guess your PUK code. Multiple incorrect entries of the PUK code -- generally 10 -- will cause your SIM card to be permanently disabled. You'll then need to purchase a replacement SIM card. If your SIM card is blocked, you can still make emergency phone calls. If you want to avoid having to enter your PUK code in the future, you can disable the SIM card security lock in your phone's security settings. This will turn off the request for the PIN code when your phone is powered on.
