Talking Like a Pirate

Talking like a Pirate. On Sept 19th, It's International Talk Like a Pirate Day. First of all when a Pirate says "Arrgh", is that correct?, or is it "Arr", the dictionaries don't help much when it comes to this word. After going to see for 11 years, I've picked up some words myself. I of course was a good person who had to do pirate watches in certain waters. Even after 2 years, I was still saying "bulkheads" and like "hey, pick that off the deck". To this day I still use the Stanchions word, because I have not found a better word than that to fit a piece of medal or wood holding something else up, And I just like the sound of it. I knew the difference between port and starboard, the bow and the stern. But who doesn't know the word "porthole".

Well, Arrgh Mate, there is a lot to understand if you want to talk like a pirate. Half the time if you put a bandana on your head then put a patch on your eye, you just might look like one. Next just talk about mates and the rough seas. Throw on some good sturdy books, because these days the ships are made of steel instead of wooden. With String Puppets you can say the
words the way you want.

Words most kids go by are Walk the Plank, meaning for punishment, they must walk off a wooden board on the side of a ship into the ocean. Sea Dog is an expression for an experienced sailor. A Scallywag is a bad person. Sea Rovers is a term for a pirate ship. Now comes a word I have used while working on ships "Avast" I have always used it as "Stop" Disney as a whole new meaning for it. and then you have the ones who say Avast means A hand plunger to wash clothes by hand. All these terms are something to keep in mind. In Boot camp they teach you no Skylarking, Which means no looking around, keep your mind on what you are doing. There are 8 official terms for skylarking, so whatever makes you comfortable. In the Older Days Scuttlebutt meant A butt was a barrel. Scuttle meant to chop a hole in something. They would use the water barrel with a hole cut into it, sailors would reach in and dip out drinking water.
The Scuttlebutt was the place where the ship's gossip was exchanged. To this day it's still used. If you see a ship tied up to a pier, the Mooring lines is what is used. The Bits are on the ship and the bollards are on shore. So the Mooring Lines are wrapped around the Bits on the ship and then wrapped around the Bollard on Shore.

For whatever is worth, It's all fun to talk like that and there are Nautical words that can mean many different things. So as long as you look like one, throw in a couple of "Arrgh Mate" We just hope your just playing a pirate. Puppets and Marionettes have finger puppets and string puppets that will entertain the whole family.
