- 1). Plant blackberry canes in the spring so they can completely establish before cooler temperatures kick in. Dig a hole as deep as the root ball and about twice as wide. For multiple plants, keep the spacing at least 2 feet apart so the plants have room to grow. For trailing blackberry plants you may want to space them even farther apart.
- 2). Place the plant in the hole and backfill with soil up to the base. Firmly pack the soil down and water generously for a full five minutes. Let the soil settle.
- 3). Prune back the newly planted bush about a week after planting. Cut it back so it is only around 8 inches from the ground. This will help develop a strong root system since it won't be producing berries the first season anyway.
- 4). Continue to water the blackberry plant every week to keep the soil consistently moist but never saturated.
