What Are Polycarbonate Panels?

    Identification

    • Polycarbonate panels contain a main polymer substance known as Bisphenol A (BPA). BPA gives these panels the glossy appearance of glass or acrylic while adding high durability and strength.

    Resistance

    • Polycarbonate panels offer a resistance rating 200 times higher than tempered glass, and their properties include flame resistance, high durability and weather resistance. Manufacturers apply different grades of glazing, or coats of material comprised of silica and iron oxides, to include or supplement such polycarbonate properties as bullet, hurricane and heat resistance.

    Applications

    • Banks often use polycarbonate panels in the construction of bulletproof windows, while homeowners utilize them in patios and terraces to protect against rain and reduce the ultraviolet effects of sunlight. Polycarbonate panels are also found in UV-resistant sunglasses and fences.
