Winter Activities for the Early Years

    Wax Skating

    • Whether you have an ice skating rink nearby or not, have your kids practice their ice skating routine with this activity from the Preschool Rainbow website. Gather up enough waxed paper so every participating child gets two pieces for each foot. Assemble the children on a carpeted or tiled surface and place one piece of waxed paper under each of the children's feet. For a "wax skating" race, line the kids up on one side of the room. When you say "Go," the children all race to the opposite side of the room. The first kid to make it to the "finish line" wins the game. Remind children to practice gliding by keeping their feet on the floor and using the slippery paper to "skate" to the finish line.

    Paper Plate Snowmen

    • Have the children try their hands at a winter craft with this activity from the Enchanted Learning website. To start, gather up two paper plates for every child and some black, white and orange construction or foam paper. Using safety scissors, have the children cut one of their paper plates into a smaller circle. Then, use a hole punch to make two holes near the bottom of both paper plates. Have the children tie a piece of ribbon or yarn to attach the two circles together. Tell the kids to design their snowman's accessories (boots, mittens, corn cob pipes) and facial attributes (carrot noses, eyes, twig arms) onto the construction or foam paper. Once ready, cut these out and have the children glue them to their snowmen. Hang the snowmen around the house when the children have finished making them.

    Freeze Dance

    • Give your kids some exercise as they celebrate the winter season. Begin by gathering all of the children into a large indoor space. Turn on some music and tell the children they need to dance to keep the snow away. At a random moment, turn the music off. Tell the children the snow has come and they all have to freeze. Survey the room for a few seconds to see if any one moves from their spot. Eliminate any player you catch moving when the music is off. Keep stopping the music and turning it on until only one player remains in the game. Declare him the winner.
