Homelite String Trimmers Repair Information

    Ignition System Repairs

    • The ignition system starts via a coil inside the ignition module; when this coil develops a large enough electrical charge, the flywheel's magnets connect with the module, sending the charge up to the spark plug. Ignition system repairs range from installing a new spark plug to changing out the wires or replacing the ignition module and flywheel. These repairs involve high-voltage electricity, which can be dangerous and even lethal. Except for changing out a bad plug, ignition system repairs are best left to a professional mechanic.

    Fuel System Repairs

    • The fuel system starts at the tank: Fuel gets suctioned into the carburetor through the pulsing of the crankcases; at the carburetor, it gets mixed with air and sent into the cylinder for combustion. Fuel system repairs can range from installing a new fuel tank or fuel filter to replacing the fuel lines and carburetor. Most fuel system repairs can be made with a few tools and are inexpensive, greatly improving your engine's performance. You should replace the fuel filter and fuel lines seasonally or more frequent if you use your Homelite string trimmer in dusty, dirty conditions.

    Carburetor Repairs

    • The carburetor has three sections: the metering section, where the fuel is measured; the mixing section, where the fuel is combined with air; and the pump, where the fuel/air mix is brought in from the tank and pushed into the cylinder. Inlet needles in the mixing section tend to lose their position, diaphragms warp and stick together, and jets and bores get dirty from fuel impurities. Carburetor repairs are often best left to a professional, as any error can cause serious problems in the internal engine.

    Internal Engine Repairs

    • The crankshaft sits below the piston. When the crankshaft spins, it powers the piston up and down. These parts need a stable amount of pressure to keep the gas flowing and the ignition system running. Air leaks around the gaskets of the carburetor and crankcase will cause a serious loss in engine power, as too much air will be in the system. Piston seals can also create power loss. Piston rings and the piston can get damaged if the engine wasn't run with the proper mixed fuel. These parts are difficult to replace and better left to a mechanic.
