How to View Desktop From Linux Command Line

    Starting the GUI

    • 1). Power on your computer and let it boot into the operating system.

    • 2). Log in under the user whose desktop you wish to view.

    • 3). Type "startx" into the command line and press "Enter." Alternatively, you can type "init 5" and press "Enter." Your system should now boot into your graphical desktop.

    Viewing the Desktop Files

    • 1). Power on your computer and let it boot into the operating system.

    • 2). Log in under the user whose desktop you wish to view.

    • 3). Type "cd /home/" and press "Enter" to take you to the "home" directory. This directory is filled with the folders of every user.

    • 4). Type "cd username/Desktop" and press "Enter" where "username" is the name of the user whose Desktop files you want to view. You either need to be logged in as that user to view the files or as root.
