- 1). Put on safety glasses or goggles. Open the hood of your vehicle and disconnect the negative cable from your battery with a small wrench. Ensure that your doors are open before you disconnect the battery terminal; often electric locks activate when the battery is disconnected.
- 2). Find the car-door speakers in your front door. Determine if you can remove the speaker covers alone for speaker access or if you will have to remove the entire door panel to access the speakers. Gain access to the front speakers by either using a thin screwdriver to pry off the covers or removing the front-door panels.
- 3). Unscrew the four mounting screws on the front speaker with a Phillips screwdriver. Cut through any adhesive with a utility knife. Unplug the speaker connections and remove the speaker.
- 4). Connect the vehicle wiring to the new speakers, ensuring that positive connects to positive and negative connects to negative. Note that the positive terminal is larger than the negative terminal on the speaker. Solder the wires in place. Note that you can also purchase wiring harness kits that allow you to simply plug in your new speakers.
- 5). Mount the speaker with the four screws. Replace the speaker cover or door panel.
- 6). Find the rear speakers of your vehicle. These are often located above the rear seat, in the rear door or along the rear side panel. Gain access to the rear speakers by either using a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws securing the cover in place or using a thin screwdriver to pry off the cover.
- 7). Remove and replace the rear speakers in the same fashion that you removed and replaced the front speakers.
- 1). Unbolt your old stereo receiver. Determine if your receiver is in place with metal spring clips or if it hooks to the dash directly with brackets. Free a stereo that is in place with spring clips by inserting two DIN tools into the slots on each side of the stereo and push. Pull the stereo out at the same time. Unbolt a stereo that hooks to the dash directly by removing the dash trim panel and removing the bolts securing the stereo unit in place. Disconnect all of the wiring behind the stereo unit and remove the unit.
- 2). Prepare the new stereo by connecting the appropriate wires from the receiver to the appropriate wires on the wiring harness adapter. Strip 1/4-inch off the wires and twist them together. Solder them to strengthen the connection. Note that you may have extra wires from the receiver that are not connected.
- 3). Install the stereo mounting sleeve into the dash where the new stereo will go. Push the metal pins outward with a flathead screwdriver to secure the mounting sleeve in the dash.
- 4). Plug the new stereo into the vehicle connections. Put on your safety glasses or goggles and reconnect the negative battery terminal, ensuring that you leave your front doors open. Turn on the vehicle and test the new stereo to make sure it works properly. Listen to each speaker to ensure a proper connection.
- 5). Turn the vehicle off and slide the stereo into the sleeve. Listen for a click sound as the stereo fits in place. Install any dash trim that you removed or that came with the stereo system.
