About Motorcycle Safety Clothing

    History

    • Through the 1920s, early motorcycle riders borrowed the styles of aviators and military-type jackets. These were short-wasted and zipped in the front to afford a warm, comfortable jacket. These jackets also protected the rider from the elements.

As the years evolved, so did the style of motorcycle wear. Marlon Brando introduced a style worn in the movie "The Wild One" and motorcyclists adapted it as standard wear for protection, comfort and style. Leather became the most common wear because of its durability.

    Types

    • Today there are many different types of motorcycle safety clothing. We now have street motorcycles, asphalt racing motorcycles and dirt racing motorcycles. Leather jackets, chaps and gloves is the standard protective clothing for casual street driving motorcycles.

Hard-shelled protective clothing is geared toward racing motorcyclists. Hard plastic shin guards, chest armor and elbow pads make up the customer dress of the motorcycle racer. Standard for all types of riding are tough leather boots, gloves and helmets.

    Function

    • Leather wear serves the purpose of protecting the rider from the weather, keeping him warm, and adds a tough layer between the motorcyclist and the road's surface when he's involved in a crash.

The harder body armor protection worn by racers serves to protect their body at high speeds. Shin guards protect in hard cornering. Chest armor will protect the rider from the impact of hitting the handlebars in an accident.

    Significance

    • It is important that motorcyclists wear the proper safety equipment that is geared to the type of motorcycle riding they are involved in. The safety gear is designed to protect the rider from harm or severe injury. Racing, or dirt bike riding are far more dangerous, so the rider should wear heavier protective gear such as the body armor types.

    Benefits

    • There are numerous benefits to wearing the proper protective clothing on a motorcycle. Street riders will enjoy their ride much more when they are protected from the elements. Racers and dirt bike riders are protecting themselves from potential injuries while enjoying their sport. Proper safety clothing will lessen injuries sustained in a crash. It may be the difference between walking away, or spending time in a hospital.

    Size

    • All motorcycle safety clothing comes in a wide variety of sizes. As riders have become younger and smaller, the companies have started supplying clothing and gear to fit them. Sizes can be found to fit any age, height or weight. There is no reason the smallest to the largest motorcycle rider should not be outfitted in the proper protective safety clothing.
