12. Session Manm
Sanborn’s also a highly respected session musician who’s played with countless popular musicians from David Bowie, Eric Clapton and Linda Ronstadt to the Grateful Dead, Elton John and Roger Waters.
13. Double Vision
In 1986, Sanborn recorded Double Vision, the first of two albums with pianist Bob James. It peaked at #50 on the Billboard album chart where it remained steady for over a year. The record features some of Sanborn’s most beloved songs (including Marcus Miller’s “Maputo”) and earned a Best Vocal Performance Grammy nom for Al Jarreau for their version of “Since I Fell for You.” In 2013, Sanborn reunited with James (and long time drummer Steve Gadd) to record Quartette Humaine, a widely endorsed record that was reviewed here.
14. In The Laboratory
In 1991, Sanborn released Another Hand, a record that detoured him from his contemporary jazz leanings to more experimental fare.
15. Other Gigs
Other projects have include a two-night performance at Carnegie Hall with rock singer Roger Daltrey of The Who, a performance in The Wizard Of Oz in Concert (to support the Children’s Defense Fund) and a 1996 concert performance on TNT.
16. TV On The Radio
Sanborn is no stranger to radio and television. He was a regular performer with the Late Night with David Letterman band during the 1980, co-hosted a critically acclaimed NBC late night music program with Jools Holland (called Night Music) and hosted a syndicated radio program, The jazz Show with David Sanborn during the 80s and 90s.
17. Gone Gigging
Recently, Sanborn has been touring with Gadd and guitarist Joey DeFrancesco, sat in with the Allman Brothers at the Beacon Theater, played on Ween’s 2007 release La Cucaracha and guested on a set by Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band.
