How to Adjust a Homelite ST-145 Carburetor

    • 1). Start the Homelite ST-145 trimmer and allow it to run for five minutes. This gives the engine time to warm up for carburetor adjustments.

    • 2). Turn the idle speed screw with a flat-head screwdriver clockwise until the trimmer head begins to rotate. Turn the idle screw counterclockwise and stop once the trimmer head stops rotating. The trimmer should always idle without the trimmer head rotating.

    • 3). Rotate the low-speed screw counterclockwise with the screwdriver until it begins to sputter or act like the engine wants to cut off. The low-speed screw is the left-bottom screw with an "L" stamp. Turn the screw clockwise until the trimmer begins to rotate. Turn the screw counterclockwise until the trimmer head stops rotating.

    • 4). Hold the trimmer with the head off the ground and squeeze the throttle trigger. Turn the high-speed screw clockwise with the screwdriver until the smoke begins to expel from the exhaust or the engine makes a high pitched squealing sound. Turn the screw counterclockwise until the engine begins to sputter or feel sluggish. Turn the screw clockwise until the engine sounds even with no smoking. Release the throttle trigger.

    • 5). Adjust the idle speed screw once more after making the high-speed adjustment.
