- According to 29 CFR, 5 foot-candles are required for general construction area lighting, warehouses, corridors, hallways, exit ways, tunnels, shafts and other underground work areas. The type of lighting used to reach the needed foot-candles does not matter. OSHA states that, for example, vehicle-powered lights may be used if they generate enough foot-candles. Hand lamps are required for emergencies purposes for those working underground.
- The following areas must be lit to 3 foot-candles: excavation and waste areas, access ways, active storage areas, loading platforms, refueling and field maintenance areas.
- Batch plants, mess halls, store rooms and indoor toilets are among the areas that must be lit to 10 foot-candles, according to 29 CFR. Tunnel and shaft heading may require 10 foot-candles in the event of drilling, mucking or scaling.
- First-aid stations, infirmaries and offices require 30 foot-candles of light, as these areas may require precise actions that would be difficult under dim light.
- According to OSHA standard 1926.26, illumination in work areas is only required while work is in progress. The foot-candles requirements may be met through artificial or natural lighting.
