How to Put in Rock Landscaping Instead of Grass

    • 1). Use the rakes and shovels to scrape the top layer of sod (mixture of grass and dirt) off of the lawn. You do not need to dig down very deep (only an inch or so) to scoot underneath the sod and remove it.

    • 2). Discard the sod and then use the blades of the shovels to make a narrow trench surrounding the lawn. Simply shove the blade into the dirt approximately 6 inches or so and pull it back out. Do this continuously around the lawn.

    • 3). Lay the plastic sheeting over the entire lawn, overlapping the small trench you made. Secure the plastic by shoving the bottom of the landscaping edging into the trench along with the edge of the plastic. The plastic will keep weeds from coming up through your rock landscaping.

    • 4). Place the large boulders throughout the lawn in a fashion that is pleasing to the eye, and then pour the lava rock throughout the lawn to a depth of 2 to 3 inches.
