Accompany the elderly driver on several outings. Observe her reactions and whether she sees and follows road signs. Watch for any signs of hesitancy or unreasonably slow driving. Tactfully discuss these issues with her; it may be that she merely needs glasses or a hearing aid. - 2). Take the elderly person to an optometrist for vision tests. Explain that the doctor will perform an acuity test, a refraction assessment, a visual field test, and a glaucoma test. Inform her that the optometrist will place a few drops of liquid into each eye which may temporarily cause blurry vision. Make sure that the elderly person is driven to and from the appointment.
- 3). Accompany the elderly driver to the audiologist. Explain that the audiologist will request a full medical history (including any medications being taken). Also mention to the elderly driver that he will be asked to sit in a sound booth placed where ear plugs will be inserted and a variety of sounds and tones will be played in order to determine his ability to perceive different levels of sound. The audiologist may also perform a speech test.
