- 1). Determine if the flooring was vinyl or asphalt and installed between 1900 and 1986. Obtain documentation about when the flooring was purchased, who the flooring was purchased from, who laid the flooring, and when it was laid. If it was asphalt or vinyl flooring purchased and installed during that time frame, chances are it contains some amount of asbestos.
- 2). Use InspectAPedia's photo identification guide to look up your vinyl or asphalt flooring. Scroll through the page and find the date of when you think the flooring might have been installed. Click on the image to enlarge it and compare to your flooring. If the match is close, it's always best to be on the safe side and assume that asbestos could be present in the material and take the appropriate precautions in dealing with asbestos materials.
- 3). Call an asbestos testing facility to have them analyze the sample. They will come and collect a sample from your residence. Wait a few weeks for the test results. They will be able to tell you with a high degree of certainty the percentage of asbestos contained in the flooring materials.
