- The first use for LED was to indicate power, status and other information on electronic gadgets, replacing small incandescent and neon bulbs. The seven-segment LED number display found its way into clocks and other equipment in the 1970s.
- Spurred by advances in brightness, LED is now available for home lighting. Its efficiency and durability is better than CFL or incandescent bulbs, though it costs several times as much as the alternatives.
- An electronic device that combines an LED with a photocell, an optocoupler keeps electrical noise out of control circuits. Since it is a sealed unit, the LED is never seen.
- Invisible light from an infrared LED in the end of a remote control signals a television to change channels.
- Already available for a few years in small devices, like MP3 players, organic LED displays are poised to move into the large screen market for televisions. The thinness, low power consumption and good visual performance make it competitive with LCD and plasma displays.
