- 1). Enable your browser's built-in popup blocker. The location of this feature varies depending on the browser. In Internet Explorer, click "Tools," move the mouse cursor over "Pop-up Blocker" and make sure that it is enabled. In Firefox, click "Tools," then "Options," then open the "Content" tab and check the box next to "Block pop-up windows."
- 2). Install a free popup-blocking application like PopUpCop or Popup Ad Smasher (see Resources). These applications will block all popup ads by default; customize the settings to make them more or less sensitive according to your needs.
- 3). Use a free anti-adware application like Ad-Aware or Spybot: S&D (see Resources). Scan your entire computer for malicious applications, then remove any that the program finds. Adware can cause advertisements to pop up on your computer even if you aren't using the Internet, and could signify the presence of more harmful malware.
