- 1). Remove the strings from the guitar. It's important to avoid uneven pressure on the strings so you'll want to remove them in alternating fashion low E to high E.
- 2). Butt the steel ruler up against the face of the guitar's nut. You should use the zero end of the ruler against the nut and rest the other end over the guitar's bridge.
- 3). Locate the twelfth fret. This is the half way point between the nut and the bridge. In essence, the 12th fret is the middle point of the guitar's scale length.
- 4). Make note of the measurement on the steel ruler. For example, a 25.5 inch scale length should read approximately 12.75 inches.
- 5). Multiply your findings by two to get the overall scale length of your guitar. For example, if your measurement from the nut to the twelfth fret is 12.5 inches you'll multiply that to get a 25-inch scale length.
