- 1). Decide on a shape of brick paver you'd like to use as your walkway or garden border. Research different sizes and shapes online or at your local home gardening store. There are many different shapes and sizes to choose from, including plain rectangular bricks, octagons, wedges, fans and x-shapes. Most of these can be used for any space needed, and it is just a matter of which one you think will look nicer patterned as a walkway.
- 2). Choose a color of brick you'd like. While the standard red color you think of when you think "brick" is definitely a viable option, there are many others that you should also consider. If your home is brick and you've painted your home white, for instance, you may want a brick paver border around your flower garden that is also white or you may want a stark contrast and have a deep red brick border. There are also colors like pink, peach, beige and many other variations that you should consider for your project.
- 3). Find out how much space needs to be covered by brick pavers. Measure the space needing to be covered in square feet. Measure the length and width of the space and multiple those numbers together to get the square feet needed. If the area you want paved is round or oddly-shaped, round up. Measure the width and height using straight lines as best you can to find an approximate square footage. Before proceeding to Step 4, remember that it's always better to have more than enough brick pavers than to not have enough brick pavers. Also remember that with oddly shaped areas, the pavers will have to be cut to fit the shape, which could result in multiple pavers being used or discarded.
- 4). Find out how many brick pavers you'll actually need. Research the size of the type of paver you're interested in purchasing. For example, if you're looking to purchase a standard brick size for paving (like a typical brick you'd think of), you would multiple the width of the brick by the length of the brick. This will be square inches. A standard brick is approximately 3.5 inches wide and 8 inches long. That is 28 square inches. You'll need to make that into feet, which would be 28 divided by 12 (2.3). Divide the square foot number of the space you need covered by the square foot of the brick (in this case, 2.3), and you'll come up with the number of bricks you'll need. Round to the nearest 50 to account for breakage and remember there will also be more space taken up by the morter.
- 5). Take the information you've gathered on what type, size, shape, color and how many brick pavers you will need to your local home garden store. Ask clerks for more information on cost and take a look at the pavers in person. Feel the bricks, lift them up and try to imagine them as your walkway. Either purchase the bricks from this store or try to find a better deal online, as there many be a company specializing in brick paving that will have more of what you're looking for and for less.
