- 1). Measure the string out to the length needed. Calculate your bow strings breaking strain to determine the string size and strands needed. Set up your string jig according to your string length.
- 2). Tie a loop at the end of your string and clamp it to one of the pegs on your string jig. Wrap the strands around the jig until you have the number of strands you want for your string. Remember that a complete loop counts as two strands. Cut the end of the string at the peg.
- 3). Wax the ends of each string in the bundle about 12 inches down. Hold the two bundles between your thumb and forefinger. Use your other hand to twist the bundle six or more times counterclockwise.
- 4). Rotate the bundles and keep repeating the twisting and rotating process until you have enough to make a loop. Hold the two bundles together and perform the same twisting and rotating process until the strings have been braided together.
- 5). Twist and rotate the bundles the entire string length. Braid the end back into the string to make another loop. Wax the entire string before putting it on your bow. String your bow and wax the string again. Use a soft cloth to work the wax into the string. By using a cloth you can wrap it around the string to coat all exposed areas. Waxing the string is very important for a number of reasons. The wax becomes a barrier and keeps the fibers together. Secondly, wax protects the string from the environment.
