Could You Kill Someone?

For most of us this is a question we hope we never have to answer.
I remember seeing this movie a few years back.
In this particular scene a father is trying to keep his son from killing a man.
He tells his son that if you steal from a man, that you can later replace.
However if you kill a man that you can never give back and you can never compensate his family.
My guess would be that most of us would answer yes to this question with one caveat, it would depend on the situation.
For most of us there are only two situations where we would take someone's life.
(1) Self Defense & (2) Defense of a loved one or other person that we thought was in imminent danger.
Some would add defense of property but I would hate to think that I took something that I could never replace over something that was probably replaceable.
Even if the two above situations did present themselves and you had to do it and it was justified, do you think you could live in peace with it for the rest of your life.
Even police officers who know that as part of their job duties they might have to take a life at any given moment, struggle with it.
Most will tell you it's not the paper work or questions from internal affairs and/or the media or even the victims family that bothers them the most, it's knowing that they have taken life from another human being.
It doesn't matter whether in their mind or in reality the shooting was completely justified, it still doesn't make it any easier for them to sleep at night.
If it's so hard on them mentally, imagine what it would be like for you the average person trying to cope with the fact that you have killed someone.
This is why I have always advocated having some type of non-lethal protection in my home and one that I can carry with me at all times.
I know a lot of people keep guns in their home.
I'm certainly not advocating that you should not, only try and make it a last resort option.
Some people including myself still don't want to have guns in the home because of children, or the fact that we don't want to be put in a situation where we might actually use it on someone.
There are a lot of great self defense products out there that will accomplish the main thing you want in any self defense item, something that will temporarily disable an attacker, allowing you to get away and/or get help.
These types of items are most effective on an attacker because they can be accessed quickly and the attacker is not expecting it.
Imagine their surprise when they are hit with a face full of blazing hot pepper spray of pepper gel that sticks to their face.
How quickly will they release a grip when they are hit with 900,000 volts from a stun gun.
How much even is the attack when you whip out your 26" solid steel baton or stun baton to take on an attacker.
The key to using any of these items I described above or not being a victim is preparation and anticipation.
What do I mean by that.
Well as some of you would say by now, how are those things going to help me if I'm approached by an attacker with a gun.
The answer is they won't and neither will having a gun of your own unless you can get yours out before your attacker shoots first.
No the key to winning in these situations is not getting into them in the first place.
That's were preparation comes in.
Most of us think that it will never happen to us so we take unnecessary chances.
We go to the ATM at night.
We park our cars in dim isolated places.
We take walks in dark areas.
We come in late at night and never survey our surroundings before getting out.
We go shopping and never think that someone might follow us home.
I not suggesting that we become paranoid, just be prepared and realize that you can become a victim.
Next if you anticipate a situation you'll be better able to use your defense items.
If for example you have pepper spray or a stun gun or taser, have them handy and ready to use when you're out and about.
In other words if you're walking to your car, up to your home or apartment building, have the safety off and the item in hand ready to use.
None of these items will do you any good if you have to dig in your purse for them or if they're in the glove compartment of your car.
In other words if you anticipate that you might be a victim, you probably won't be.
