Head Lice Home Remedies

There are many head lice treatments out there.
Some can be bought over-the-counter, others require a prescription.
Many people worry about traditional methods as they contain chemicals and pesticides and while some of them can do the job, they can leave dangerous side effects.
Research is now showing that many of these chemical methods are no longer working as the lice are becoming immune to them.
That is why many people are choosing home remedies.
People who are worried about using dangerous chemicals and pesticides can and should opt to go with a home remedy solution.
There are many options, which include white vinegar, tea tree oil and oil-based products (mayonnaise and olive oil).
Home remedies are just as, if not more, effective than using traditional methods.
Whichever home remedy treatment you go with you should remember that nit picking must be a part of any solution.
Nits are lice eggs and without their removal you are still going to have a problem.
I have listed below a couple of the more common solutions: White Vinegar White vinegar can be a good solution to loosening the nits and lice so you can use a nit comb to remove them.
Vinegar will not kill the lice or nits.
To use, soak the hair with vinegar then place a towel that has been soaked in vinegar on the head for at least 1 hour.
After an hour remove the towel start using a nit comb to remove the nits and lice.
Take your time as this can be a tedious process.
Oil-based Treatments (Olive oil or Mayonnaise)
  • Cover the head thoroughly with olive oil or mayonnaise.
Take your time and make sure it really is covered from the end of the hair all the way down to the scalp.
  • Use a shower cap or plastic wrap and cover the entire head.
You or your child may look a little silly but this is important.
  • Now, with the cap or plastic wrap on, briefly blow dry the hair with hot air.
This will assist in killing the lice.
  • Leave the cap on for at least an hour, 2 hours would be ideal.
  • Remove the cap and use a nit comb and thoroughly comb the hair.
    Take your time!
  • Shampoo the hair with your regular shampoo.
It may take a few shampoos to remove all the mayonnaise or olive oil.
  • Use your nit comb again and comb through the hair removing any remaining lice and nits.
Tea Tree Oil Tea tree oil is distilled from the leaves and branches of the Myrtle tree.
The best way to use this method is to add five to ten drops of pure tree oil into a small amount of baby shampoo or regular shampoo.
Make sure the shampoo you are using is free from conditioner, detangler or any other oils.
Shampoo the hair thoroughly, cover the hair from the end of the hair to the scalp.
You may want to add a little bit of olive oil into this treatment.
Put a a shower cap on and let sit for 1 hour.
After an hour remove the cap and wash the hair again with regular shampoo to get all of the treatment out.
Again, it may take a few shampoo.
