- Privacy Protector is a fake Internet security application. The application launches pop-ups that resemble Windows notifications telling you that your computer is infected with malware and explaining how you can purchase the full version of Privacy Protector to remove the malware. Privacy Protector also changes your Internet homepage, redirects your Internet searches and replaces your desktop wallpaper with a message stating "Your privacy is in danger. Download privacy protection software now!"
- Privacy Protector can be removed automatically using an up to date anti-malware program, such as Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast! Free Antivirus or BitDefender Free Edition. The Internet security program which comes pre-installed with the Windows Vista and 7 operating systems, Windows Defender, is designed to remove spyware and thus can't remove Privacy Protector. Privacy Protector may disable your legitimate anti-malware software and prevent you from accessing common Internet security websites.
- In the event that Privacy Protector blocks your legitimate anti-malware software or you don't have access to the Internet, you can remove Privacy Protector manually. Manual removal is a technical process that, if done incorrectly can cause significant system failures and thus should not be attempted by inexperienced users. To remove Privacy Protector manually, you must delete processes, registry values, dynamic link libraries and files. Press "Ctrl," "Shift" and "Escape" to open the Task Manager. Click the "Processes" tab. End the following processes by right right-clicking the process and clicking "End Process":
