- To create 3D graphics, you first have to have 3D models. Google SketchUp has a number of tools to help you do this. Begin by opening SketchUp. You will see that the scene opens with a default 2D human figure standing on a flat plain. The figure is there to help you judge the relative sizes of things. You can select and delete it if you wish.
To the left you will see the toolbar. The icons in the toolbar represent the various tools available to you. Start by selecting the "Line" tool. Now use it to draw the shape of your floorplan onto the ground surface. As you draw you will see colored guidelines that indicate when you are creating a line directly on an axis. This will help you create a straight object even in the "Perspective" view.
Once you have drawn out your floorplan, select the "Push/Pull" tool and raise the building to the height you want. To produce a sloped roof, use the "Line" tool to draw a line across the top. Then select the "Move" tool to raise the slope of the roof.
Click on the 3D Warehouse icon to add things like windows and doors to your house. Or you could simply model these things separately for yourself. - Now that you have your basic house shape, you can apply colors or textures. To do this, select the "Paint Bucket" tool. A dialog box will open where you can select from a wide range of materials to apply to your house. For instance, you might decide to apply a white wood siding to your house, or you might prefer brick. To apply a material you have selected, click on a particular side (polygon) and the program will apply the material.
- Once you have completed your model, it's time to export it to a format usable in whatever rendering program you choose. The most commonly used 3D exchange format is Wavefront OBJ. Select "File" and click "Export." Name the model and save it as and OBJ file. Now open your rendering program and import the model. It will come in complete with textures and ready to render.
