- 1). Learn fly fishing. According to some fisherman fly fishing is an art that you can practice for a lifetime and still not get perfect. The technique is to snap the rod with your wrist, making the line fly out and the fly just barely touch the water in a quick skittering motion. You repeat this motion over and over until a fish strikes at the fly. A popper is a special kind of fly that produces a bouncing motion in the water due to the curved shape of its body.
- 2). Learn rod-and-reel fishing with spoons or crank bait. You can use many different kinds of lures or baits when spincasting with a rod and reel, but spoons or crank bait are commonly used, especially for freshwater fishing, This fishing technique is relatively straightforward. You just cast the line with the lure out 10 to 30 feet with an overhead or sidearm motion and gradually reel in the lure. Being reeled in creates the motion of the minnow-like spoon lure or crank bait in the water.
- 3). Learn fishing with plug lures. Plug lures are larger lures and are designed as either floating plugs or diving plugs depending on what you are fishing for. Plug lures are most commonly used on saltwater fish or larger freshwater fish. The technique here is the typical cast-and-reel-in technique, but you can get casts of greater than 50 feet with the heavier plug lures.
- 4). Learn fishing with spinners and spinner baits. Spinners are a special class of lures designed to spin in the water when moving to attract the attention of the fish. Spinners and spinner bait lures are very similar, with just a different design to create the rotation and movement. Fishing using spinners is much like other spincasting with a rod and reel, except you should reel in more slowly to get maximum movement.
- 5). Learn fishing with surface lures. Surface lures are designed to imitate mice, lizards, frogs, larger insects and smaller or injured fish. As the name suggests, surface lures float on the surface of the water, and the fish strike at them from below. Very slow reeling in with an occasional bob or twitch is the most effective technique for fishing with surface lures.
