- 1). Remove old varnish from the kitchen chair by sanding it with a palm sander stocked with 120-grit sandpaper. Sand with the chair's wood grain until the finish looks dull. Don't sand against the grain of the wood or you will damage the kitchen chair.
- 2). Remove the 120-grit sandpaper from the palm sander and replace it with 220-grit sandpaper. Sand the kitchen chair until it feels smooth to your fingers.
- 3). Remove sawdust from the kitchen chair using sticky tack cloths.
- 4). Protect portions of the kitchen chair you do not want stained by covering them with professional painter's tape. Place the kitchen chair on drop cloths.
- 5). Coat the kitchen chair with an oil-based stain using a paintbrush strictly engineered for use with oil-based paints. Use cloth rags to wipe excess stain from the kitchen chair. Wait six hours for the stain to dry.
- 6). Use mineral spirits to wash out the stain from the paintbrush.
- 7). Coat the kitchen chair with varnish, using the clean paintbrush. Wait six hours before using the kitchen chair.
