Spreading Holiday Cheer
When a fellow servicemember or military family needs assistance the military community is always "at the ready." If you're looking for ways to spread a little extra holiday cheer to the troops and their family, here are four ideas to get you started.
Unit Members
Is there a servicemember or military family in your unit who requires some form of assistance? If you can't think of a family, ask your Family Readiness Group (FRG) leader or Family Readiness Officer (FRO).
To preserve privacy, your leader or officer may not be able to offer a name, but knows of a family or families experiencing hardships. If this is the case, ask for a list of needed items.
Military Support Organizations
Check with your local Veteran's groups, USO and similar non-profits about holiday fundraisers, activities or scheduled special events. Your assistance, whether monetary or otherwise is always appreciated.
Wounded Servicemembers
If you live close to a military hospital, consider paying a visit to our nations wounded warriors. Most hospitals have policies regarding visits from strangers, gifts and donations. To ensure compliance, call the hospital beforehand and inquire about the facility's rules and regulations.
Veterans of Yesteryear
Numerous Veterans from WWII, Korea and Vietnam reside in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Sadly, many either have no living relatives or their family resides miles away. Simple acts such paying these heroes a visit, sending a holiday card or dropping off baked goodies lets them know they aren't forgotten.
Helping other military families doesn't require a huge investment of time or money. Extending small acts of kindness during the holiday season and throughout the year is sure to brighten the days and put a smile on the face of not only the recipients, but yours too.
