Famvir: How it Works
Famvir is used to treat infections arising from herpes viruses, like varicella zoster that causes shingles and herpes simplex, or HSV, which causes cold sores or genital herpes. This antiviral drug has an active substance - famciclovir - which works by blocking the production of DNA by the herpes virus. Thus, by stopping the multiplication of the virus, this drug restricts the growth of the virus and the consequent infection. This drug is available in the EU under various trade names like Famciclovir-Sandoz, Famciclovir-SB, Famciclovir-SB Zoster, Famvir Zoster and Oravir.
Therapeutic Indications of Famvir
Famvir is recommended for the treatment of:
- Herpes Zoster or Shingles and Ophthalmic Zoster (shingles around the eye) in case of patients having a normal immune system
- Herpes Zoster in case of patients with weaker immune systems
- First and the recurrent occurrence of Genital Herpes in case of patients having a normal immune system
- Recurrent occurrence of Genital Herpes in case of patients with weaker immune systems
- Suppression of the recurrence of genital herpes in case of patients with normal immunity and patients with reduced levels of immunity.
Famvir: Certain Important Facts and Information
Famvir should be taken only after a doctor prescribes it. Along with the consumption of this drug, patients need to take certain precautions, especially those who are suffering from Genital Herpes.
- Since this is a sexually transmitted disease, patients should avoid intercourse when lesions or other symptoms are present to avoid the spread of the infection to their partner.
- The consumption of the drug can cause dizziness, confusion or some disturbances to the central nervous system in case of some patients. Such patients should avoid driving or operating any kind of machinery in such a scenario.
- People allergic to penciclovir cream should not take Famvir.
- Again patients who have had a kidney or a bone marrow transplant should not take this anti viral drug.
- People with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, a severe lactase deficiency should not take Famvir tablets as they contain lactose.
- Avoid touching an infected area.
- You should drink lots of water while taking this medicine.
- The drug needs to be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
- The medication should be taken for the entire length prescribed by the doctor, even if the symptoms have improved
