How to Optimize a Blog

    Writing Blog Entries

    • 1). Write blog entries on a regular basis. Pick a time frame such as daily, weekly, every other week or monthly and actually schedule time to write in your blog. The content needs to be updated as often as you can find time to do so that people visiting the blog will continue to come back and they will share the blog with others.

    • 2). Keep the tone of your entries informal. The writing style should reflect a more relaxed tone as if you were speaking face-to-face with the readers. If you are blogging for professional reasons, write relaxed and informal but keep it all strictly business.

    • 3). Make sure that all of the facts, figures and quotes used in entries are accurate. Double check yourself to make sure you have the research, if included, correct. Also give credit for someone's work when including it in your blog.

    • 4). Keep entries short and to the point. Most blog entries include just a few paragraphs. If you want to say more about a topic, make it another blog entry.

    • 5). Edit. Write each entry and save it. Then re-read it and edit the entry. Then re-read the edit and edit again. Just because the tone is informal and relaxed, you still want to make sure that your entries make sense and hit all of the points that you need.

    • 6). Mix it up by using different formats. Use bullets or numbers to highlight different points. Enter a how-to and share your expertise. Enter a book review. Include favorite or meaningful quotes from others in the field, from songs or from poems (don't forget to give credit where credit is due).

    Getting Your Blog Read

    • 1). Always write give each entry a title and make sure the title is SEO friendly. This is one of the most important steps you can complete to make sure that your blog is found by the search engines such as Yahoo! or Google. To help get the keywords you need, go to google.com and use the keyword tools to help you write in a SEO style.

    • 2). Write SEO friendly content for each blog entry. The first two paragraphs of your entry should contain as many keywords on the subject that you can relevantly fit. This will help your search rank in the search engines.

    • 3). Submit your blog to major search engines and blog directories. There are a number of blog directories online. If you go to one of the search engines and type in 'blog directories' you'll get a long list of directories. Some of the top directories include Blog Catalog and Blog Street.

    • 4). Link to other blogs. Find other related blogs or blogs that you are really interested in and find unique and put a link on your blog. Outbound links help you get a better search engine ranking.

    • 5). Title each graphic or photo used on your blog. And, make the titles SEO friendly. Search engines find text faster and better than finding graphics and photos.
