Have you had enough of living with the fear of stammering? A few years ago I would have answered yes to all of these questions. This is because I had a stammering problem for eighteen years which originally began to affect my speech when I was just four years of age. I am now happy to report that I have managed to achieve fluency and in this article I will be writing about the latest treatments that are available for people who stammer.
I will never forget the sheer frustration that I used to feel when I had a stammer. I could never quite understand why I could speak fairly well for certain periods but how at other times I would struggle to say a single word. These struggles would normally occur when I felt under any kind of pressure, for example when I was speaking on the telephone, when I had to speak in front of a crowd or when I had to say words beginning with particular letters, like b.d.k and v.
There are now a number of treatments for stammering including:
Group speech therapy classes
With this type of stammering therapy around fifteen to twenty people who stammer will enrol on a group course. These courses are normally held over a four or five-day period and are run by people who are fully qualified speech and language therapists or possibly from somebody who has previously had a stammer.
One-to-one stammering courses
The one-to-one speech therapy courses are quite rare but can be very popular. The majority of people who stammer would rather attend an individual course than the more regular type of group course. One-to-one courses are typically held over a two, three or five-day period.
There are alternative types of stammering treatment available including a stammering therapy audiobook, a dvd and an ebook.
