Having Cub Scouts wear a uniform communicates several positive things: a sense of equality, as all boys within the organization wear the same uniform; a sense of belonging and identity, as anyone looking upon a Cub Scout in uniform can see that he is part of the BSA and part of his council and unit; and accomplishment, as badges clearly display what the scout has achieved and the scout's commitment to the ideals of the program. - The class A uniform consists of an official Cub Scout shirt, with all appropriate insignia affixed to it, official Cub Scout pants or shorts, the Cub Scout web belt, with appropriate belt buckle, official Cub Scout socks, the appropriate neckerchief for the scout's rank along with the matching slide, and the official Cub Scout hat for his particular rank.
The official Cub Scout uniform is worn throughout a scout's Cub Scout experience, until he becomes a Webelos, at which point he may choose to switch over to the tan and olive uniform of the Boy Scouts. - The official Cub Scout shirt is navy blue and comes with the American flag and a patch that says "Boy Scouts of America" attached to it. The scout must add the World Crest patch, which shows that he is a member of the worldwide scouting movement, his council strip, which identifies him as a member of his council, his pack number, his den number and the badges of his rank. The scout may also wear a religious emblem on his shirt if he has earned it.
- Cub Scouts wear blue socks with an orange band at the top when they are Tiger Cubs, and blue socks with a yellow band at the top for the rest of their Cub Scout career.
Cub Scout pants and shorts are the same blue color as the shirt, and should always be neat and pressed.
The blue web belt of Cub Scouts can be worn with a Tiger buckle, a Cub Scout buckle or a Webelos buckle. The belt itself is unique in scouting in that it is the only one capable of holding the belt loops that the boy will earn as a Cub Scout.
The neckerchief and slide both have the emblem of the boy's rank emblazoned on them. When the scout is a tiger, his neckerchief is orange and blue. When he is a wolf, it is yellow and blue. During his bear year it is light blue and dark blue. Once he becomes a Webelos it is plaid.
The official Cub Scout hats match the neckerchiefs in both color combination and insignia. - Those who become Webelos may switch over to the official Boy Scout uniform if they wish. All of the same insignia is worn on this shirt, with the exception of the badges of rank. These are replaced by a Webelos badge, worn on the left pocket, where the tiger, bobcat, wolf and bear badges are worn on the Cub Scout shirt.
Additionally, Webelos add blue shoulder loops to the epaulets on the Boy Scout shirt, and may wear the Webelos colors, pinned to the right sleeve, below his den number.
In place of the Cub Scout pants, Webelos wear the official Boy Scout pants or shirts, which are olive, along with Boy Scout socks, which are also olive with either a red or black, BSA printed band at the top.
Webelos may choose to wear either the blue web belt that holds their belt loops, or their new olive web belt without the belt loops. - There are some activities which the full uniform may not be appropriate for, such as camping and some sports activities. In these situations, the scout may substitute his class A shirt for an activity or class B shirt. This is typically either a golf shirt or T-shirt that is specific to his pack, council or district. Occasions where the class B uniform is acceptable should be communicated by the den leader to the scouts and their parents in advance.
