How to Report Joint Ownership for Home Interest

    • 1). Determine how much of the interest paid on Form 1098 was paid by each party.

    • 2). Claim only the amount you paid on Schedule A (Form 1040), line 11. Type or print "See Attached" next to the line item if only one party received Form 1098.

    • 3). Type a statement explaining that you paid mortgage interest but did not receive Form 1098. Include the name and address of the person who did receive the form, and the amounts each party has paid. The total should equal the total printed on Form 1098. Attach the statement to your return.
