- National cattle associations work in an effort to represent cattle producers, breeders and cattle feeders on a national level. Working as advocates for local farmers and ranchers, the national organizations are involved in speaking for or against legislation that continuously affect the cattle industry. There are also foundations established through the national organizations for scholarships and emergency crisis relief for farmers and ranchers. The American Angus Association is the nation's largest beef association with more than 30,000 members. Holstein Association USA is the largest dairy breed organization in the world. It's members have a strong interest in breeding, raising and milking Holstein cattle.
- Cattle producers are located over much of the United States, and each state has a cattle association listed by breeds. The breed you own will determine which association you will want to join. All require membership dues and will require you to list where your herd is located and what plans you have for the herd. The association will keep you informed on state issues and will be more involved on the state level with activities, events and helpful information. The Texas Limousin Association and Texas Longhorn Association are the largest state associations in the United States.
- Many cattle associations exist solely for women cattle-breeders and producers. Some are established foundations that meet regionally and work to fund scholarship programs. Animal welfare, beef nutrition, and women's role in the beef industry are the areas of focus for the women's group. While women in the cattle industry is something you might not expect, the American National Cattle Women, Inc., are focused mainly in the southwest. Caring for the land and the cattle are the top priority of this women's group.
- International cattle associations exist in many countries including Scotland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Various breeds and some exotics are produced in many countries around the world. The associations work with the United States for production and trade as well as to add to the food chain in their own countries. The associations concentrate on education, production and market demand.
