- According to TeamViewer for iPhone's description in the iTunes App Store, "The Free version of TeamViewer has exactly the same features as the Pro version. However, the license of the Free version is intended for private use only." These features include remote access to other computers, including screen resolution and special key control, use of multi-touch gestures on your iPhone or iPad to control the remote computer, and the ability to reboot computers remotely.
- Private use, according to TeamViewer, is any use for which you are not directly or indirectly paid. For example, if you receive pay as a computer support specialist using the TeamViewer app, you are not covered by the TeamViewer free license, because you are directly paid for your work. Even if you don't earn money directly from your TeamViewer use, such as if you use it to share screens with your colleagues in a business enterprise but not for the direct purpose of profit, you are still getting paid indirectly for your use according to TeamViewer's license terms, and must use the Pro version. Private use allowed by the free version includes using the app to transfer files from your computer to your phone for personal use, or helping a friend or family member solve computer issues if you are not paid for this work.
- TeamViewer uses the honor system, allowing users to choose which version to use. However, a reminder will pop up each time you use the free version asking you to upgrade to the Pro version if you are using the software for purposes not covered by the free version license. Although the software license compliance is self-regulated, the free license terms are stated in the app's "Terms and Conditions," so using the software illegally can expose you to potential legal action if the company decides to take an active stance in regulating its software.
- As of August 2011, the TeamViewer Pro software is $99.99 in the iPhone App Store. This makes it a relatively expensive app compared to other App Store offerings, especially when the free version is just as full-featured. If you need to use the software professionally, ask your boss if your company will pay for the Pro version, or consult with your tax advisor about deducting the cost from your taxes as a business expense. This will allow you to work within the legal limits of the TeamViewer licenses without as great a financial impact.
