How to Lace Tread Wear Leather on Stirrups

    • 1). Place the saddle on a secure saddle stand. This raises your saddle off of the ground so that it is easier to work on.

    • 2). Use the knife to cut the lace on the existing tread leather, if there is one. Be careful not to cut the stirrup beneath the tread leather.

    • 3). Wrap the new tread leather around the stirrup, with the ends meeting at the underside. The lacing holes on the tread leather should line up with each other.

    • 4). Tie a firm knot in one end of the leather lace. The knot should be larger than the lacing holes on the tread leather so that it keeps the leather lace from sliding through.

    • 5). Feed the leather lace through the first hole on the tread leather and pull it tight, the knot should lie against the bottom of the stirrup.

    • 6). Keeping the lace on the stirrup's underside, bring the lace around to the hole adjacent to the one you just threaded and loop it through. Continue this looped stitching pattern all of the way down the stirrup tread leather, starting the lace on the same side each time.

    • 7). Once you reach the last hole, pull the leather lace tight and tie a knot as close as possible to the tread leather.

    • 8). Cut the leather lace with the knife, leaving about one inch exposed.

    • 9). Thread the one-inch tail of the leather lace between the tread leather and the underside of the stirrup. This secures the end of the leather lace so that the knot cannot come undone and conveniently hides it from view.

Repeat this process on the opposite stirrup.
