How to Change the Transmission Fluid in a 1998 Civic

    • 1). Park the 1998 Honda Civic on level ground and pull the emergency brake out.

    • 2). Jack the front of the car up and place the jack stands under the frame rail behind each front tire. Then lower the Civic onto the jack stands.

    • 3). Crawl under the driver's side near the driver's-side door. Locate the transmission drain plug on the lower driver's side of the transmission pan.

    • 4). Slide the fluid catch pan under the transmission drain plug. Loosen the drain plug with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and socket. Turn the drain plug counterclockwise to loosen and remove the plug. Wait for all of the fluid to drain out of the transmission.

    • 5). Wipe the drain plug off with a clean rag and screw the drain plug back into the transmission. Turn the drain plug clockwise with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and socket to tighten the drain plug.

    • 6). Slide the fluid catch pan out from under the Civic. Then locate the transmission dipstick on the rear passenger side of the engine. The transmission dipstick has a small yellow handle on it. Pull the transmission dipstick out of the tube.

    • 7). Slide the long plastic funnel into the dipstick tube. Pour four quarts of the appropriate automatic transmission fluid into the funnel. Remove the funnel and put the dipstick back into the tube.

    • 8). Crank up the engine and check the transmission-fluid level on the dipstick while the engine is running. The fluid level should be on the "Full" mark on the transmission-fluid dipstick. Inspect the drain plug on the transmission for any leaks while the engine is running. Turn the engine off.

    • 9). Jack the 1998 Honda Civic up and remove the jack stands. Lower the Civic to the ground. Job complete.
