House training older dogs can seem like a big deal but it's really not that hard.
The common phrase "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" isn't true.
Don't get me wrong-it's more difficult to teach an adult canine...
but still can be done quite easily.
How do you do it? Here are a few tips to make it happen.
TIP #1) Have a CONSTANT schedule This is the most important tip of all.
Not only should you let them out at the same time but also make it a point to feed them on a fixed schedule time as well.
When you feed them directly affects when you let them out.
Most dogs can "hold it" roughly 20 minutes following eating...
so feeding them at the same time everyday means they will make sure there "potty times" are consistent as well.
Remember-canines young and old like routine.
That's just the way they are.
Therefore being consistent is the key to house training older dogs because it will let them know what to expect.
TIP #2) Do NOT give them a treat when they do something good Owners all around the globe make this mistake.
Of course you still want to encourage them...
but giving them a treat will cause them to except one every time.
Simply play with them or praise them-this will get the job done.
TIP #3) what's the RIGHT way to do "crate training"? It's very simple-take it GRADUALLY.
Don't just put them in their crate for an hour the first time.
At first just put them in their crate for 5 minutes...
then increase the time to 10...
and so on.
Eventually they will get comfortable enough that they don't need you around.
TIP #4) Don't delay Remember--the key is getting started IMMEDIATELY.
Establishing consistent ground rules is the key for house training older dogs.
