It's always tough to keep up with the latest makeup trends, especially in an industry that is always rapidly evolving - what's in this week is out next week, and something so out of style from decades ago is suddenly back in trend out of nowhere only to disappear again just as quickly as it arrived. Here are some of the top makeup trends of 2012, here today gone tomorrow, or maybe back again from years ago.

One of the top makeup trends of 2012 that has been seen all over the runways is a bold red lip that stands out and pops the face out. The rest of the face uses minimal makeup, and the shades of red can vary from a deep red, to a bright orangy red, even to a dark chocolate burgundy. The way this trend is working now is to keep the main focus on the one bright color of the lips, which is why the rest of the face should be wearing minimal makeup, or at least the lips alone should be the focal point, so no doing up your eyes as the main focus with this trend is your lips.

Another trending makeup fad for 2012 are the extreme smokey eyes. This trend like the red lip trend should focus on one focal point only. In this case the eyes are the focal point. The rest of the face should be played way down, using neutral tones, and soft, very soft pink lips will go well with this look. Again if you are going to go dramatic with either of these looks, you must stick with one or the other. A dramatic smokey eye, with the rest of the face played down, or a bright red lip with the rest of the face played down. If you can imagine a bold eye, with a bold lip, you may end up looking like a clown, or very costume - like which is okay if it's Halloween, but that's probably not the look you're going for.

Another great trends like others that have popped back up from years past, even many years past is the cat eye. The cat eye has been seen on runways all over the world this year and is one of the top makeup trends of 2012 so far. There are many ways the cat eye is being worn currently, so there's no one way about it, however this trend is definitely back, however it's good to keep this look simple as well. A matte lip will look great with a skin toned eyelid with drawn on cat eyes.

Another great trend that seems to be in trend every summer is the sun kissed look. For this trend though, the focus is on a very dramatic cheek which makes you look like you've worked up a good sweat working out. This look is best to keep the cheeks bold, and everything else simple. Nude tones and neutrals will work well on the majority of the face, and the bold blush or bronzer will enhance the cheekbones giving you a fresh sun kissed look.
