How to Make Acrylic Paint Less Shiny

    • 1). Add acrylic gel medium to the acrylic color paint to be applied on the palette. Mix the gel and paint together using a palette knife until the color is uniformly spread throughout the gel. How much gel to add and what type will depend on the effect desired by the artist and is found through experimentation only.

    • 2). Use the gel and paint mixture as if it were paint alone when creating the project. Make sure to allow the gel mixture to dry thoroughly. Check the label on the gel medium container as some gels will slow down the drying time of the acrylic paint.

    • 3). Brush on or spray a thin coat of acrylic matte varnish over the finished project. Use multiple thin layers of the varnish, allowing each layer to dry before applying the rest, to build up a protective coat at least three layers thick. Heavy coats of paint or sculpted paint will need additional layers of varnish to protect the project.
