How to Make a Lightweight Tent

    A-Frame

    • 1). Tie a rope between two trees with the height at less than one-half the width of the tarp. Tie the rope tight to create a rigid line for the tent peak.

    • 2). Drape the tarp over the top of the rope with the rope aligned at the one-half point on the tarp. Pull the corners of the tarp to the ground and pound stakes through the grommets with a rock.

    • 3). Add dry materials to the interior of the shelter for bed padding. Add an additional groundcloth to prevent contact with moisture or sleep directly on the ground in dry conditions.

    Hiking Pole Shelter

    • 1). Place the tip of a hiking pole into the center grommet on one side of the tarp. Tie a rope to the tip and pull the rope away from the tarp. Tie the rope to a tree or rock. Stand the pole on the handle to raise the side of the tarp and use the tension from the rope to hold the hiking stick upright.

    • 2). Pull the corner grommets to the side of the hiking pole and pound a stake through the grommets to create a large door area. Adjust the length of the hiking pole to change the height of the door.

    • 3). Work your way around the back of the tarp, pulling each grommet tight to the ground and adding a stake to secure the tent. Drape clothing or natural materials over the door to completely enclose the tent.
