- 1). Tie a rope between two trees with the height at less than one-half the width of the tarp. Tie the rope tight to create a rigid line for the tent peak.
- 2). Drape the tarp over the top of the rope with the rope aligned at the one-half point on the tarp. Pull the corners of the tarp to the ground and pound stakes through the grommets with a rock.
- 3). Add dry materials to the interior of the shelter for bed padding. Add an additional groundcloth to prevent contact with moisture or sleep directly on the ground in dry conditions.
- 1). Place the tip of a hiking pole into the center grommet on one side of the tarp. Tie a rope to the tip and pull the rope away from the tarp. Tie the rope to a tree or rock. Stand the pole on the handle to raise the side of the tarp and use the tension from the rope to hold the hiking stick upright.
- 2). Pull the corner grommets to the side of the hiking pole and pound a stake through the grommets to create a large door area. Adjust the length of the hiking pole to change the height of the door.
- 3). Work your way around the back of the tarp, pulling each grommet tight to the ground and adding a stake to secure the tent. Drape clothing or natural materials over the door to completely enclose the tent.
