Formation of Keane and the Band's Early Days:
In 1995, while a student at the University of London, Tim Rice-Oxley formed a covers band called the Lotus Eaters with Dominic Scott and Richard Hughes. In 1997, impressed by Rice-Oxley's piano playing, Chris Martin asked him to join a band named Coldplay. Tim Rice-Oxley turned down the offer and Tom Chaplin was added to the Lotus Eaters to take over vocals.
The band's name was soon changed to Keane, and they made their live debut in 1998.
Keane's Top Hit Singles:
- 2004 - "Somewhere Only We Know" #3 UK, #50 US
- 2004 - "Everybody's Changing" #4 UK
- 2004 - "Bedshaped" #10 UK
- 2006 - "Is It Any Wonder?" #3 UK, #78 US
- 2008 - "Spiralling" #23 UK
Building a Reputation:
Keane began touring the London pub circuit in 1998 and 1999. In January, 2000, the band released their first promotional single "Call Me What You Like" in a limited 500 copy edition. The band struggled along in the next few years with little commercial success or promise. In December, 2002, Simon Williams, a man given credit for discovering Coldplay, heard Keane perform live. He offered to release a new single "Everybody's Changing" in 2003, and it set off a major label bidding war.
'Hopes and Fears':
BBC's Sound of 2004 poll named Keane as the band most likely to succeed in the coming year. The band's first release on Island Records was the single "Somewhere Only We Know" which went to #3 on the UK singles chart.
The band's debut album Hopes and Fears was released in May 2004 and it opened at the top of the album chart. The album went on to be the second best selling album of the year in the UK, and Keane were nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy in the US.
Keane's Second Album 'Under the Iron Sea':
Keane began recording their second album in April 2005 while still on tour. The lead single for the album "Is It Any Wonder?" was another #3 hit. The album Under the Iron Sea hit stores in June 2006 and was another chart-topping release in the UK. It was also a top 5 hit in the US. Keane hit a rough place in August 2006 when Tom Chaplin entered treatment for drug and alcohol problems. As a result, the band's North American tour was cancelled.
'Perfect Symmetry' and the Future:
Amid concern that Keane may actually break up, news came out in 2007 that the band was indeed working on a third album. The single "Spiralling" appeared in August 2008, and it was awarded Track of the Year at the Q Magazine Awards in October. The new album Perfect Symmetry was set for an October 2008 release.
