- 1). Determine if you can really live without your land line. If you have a security device connected to your phone line you must find an alternative for that. If your Internet or cable is connected through phone lines, you must find alternatives for those services prior to canceling.
- 2). Choose an alternate phone service. If you are going to switch to a cell phone provider, determine if your land line phone number can be transferred to your cell phone. Review the different plans and sign up for one that will work with you and your family.
- 3). Establish service and allow time for it to get up and running. Be sure your contacts are all transferred and you have notified everyone of your new number prior to canceling the land line.
- 4). Call your local phone company and begin the process of shutting down your current phone services. Keep basic service for a short time until all your contacts have been made aware of your phone switch by downgrading to the lowest plan available or turning off the phone service.
